A Table Set for One More

How we lay a table for a long lunch — linen first, colours mixed, and always room for whoever turns up.

A Table Set for One More

Before Rosa e Flor was a brand, it was a home: quiet mornings in Arouca, flowers in the garden, stories around the table, and the feeling that there was always a place for one more.

That last part is the one we think about most. A table that can always take one more chair isn't a matter of having a bigger table. It's a way of setting it — generous, a little informal, and ready before anyone asks.

This is how we set ours for a long weekend lunch. None of it is a rule; it's just the order we do things in.

Start with the cloth

Everything else sits on the tablecloth, so it goes down first and it sets the tone. Ours is the Arouca, named for the place where this story starts: 152 × 300 cm of linen, long enough for a full family table.

Don't fight the creases. Linen that has been washed and lived with relaxes into soft folds, and a table looks more welcoming with them than without. Iron it on the reverse if you like, while it's still slightly damp — but there's no need to be precise.

Then the placemats — and don't match them

On a cloth, placemats aren't there to protect the table so much as to mark each place. That's why we like them round. The Round Placemats are 42 cm across, with rings of embroidery that radiate out from a single flower in the centre, right where the plate sits.

Mixing them is half the pleasure. Put No. 5, in pink and green, beside No. 6, in blue, coral and pink, and the table starts to look gathered over time rather than bought in one go.

The Logo Center placemats work the same way. They come in six colours and are sold individually, so a set of six can be six different colours.

A napkin with something in common

The Charm Napkin is made to sit with the round placemats: the same scalloped edge, the same single flower, at 45 × 45 cm. Fold it once and lay it to the left of the plate, or simply drop it on top. It comes in six colours, so it can match its placemat or borrow a colour from the one next to it.

Leave one place ready

If we kept nothing else from this list, we'd keep this: set one more place than you need. A plate, a napkin, a glass. If no one comes, it's moved aside after the first course. If someone does, they sit down to a place that was already waiting for them.

There was always a place for one more.

After lunch

Linen is meant to be used and washed, not saved for best. Shake the crumbs off outside, then wash cold on a gentle cycle and dry on the line. Every wash makes it a little softer — which is exactly the point.

Useful, beautiful, timeless and made to stay: pieces to live with, love and pass on. A long lunch is where that starts.
